As a personalised coach and physical activity advocate, I’ve seen how spending time in nature can benefit both body and mind. Simply stepping outside can help you reset, gain perspective, and feel more grounded.
Earlier this year as an Everyday Active Champion I joined the Kent Wildlife Trust and students from the Kent and Medway Recovery and Wellbeing College on a Wilder Wellbeing programme on Hothfield Heathlands, Ashford Kent.
The programme offered a welcome break from daily routines and an opportunity to feel more connected to nature. Regular pauses across the heathland gave us space to observe, reflect and enjoy the natural surroundings. It reinforced my belief in the value of walk and talk coaching where sessions take place outdoors, offering a refreshing alternative to being indoors.
Coaching while walking in nature brings a different dynamic to the conversation. The relaxed, open environment often helps people feel more at ease. Nature can lower stress levels, improve concentration, and support deeper reflection. Many find it easier to talk and think clearly when walking side-by-side, without the formal structure of a typical coaching session.
There is growing evidence to support the benefits of outdoor coaching. Research led by Professor Jonathan Passmore, a UK-based chartered psychologist and coach, explored how natural environments align with Attention Restoration Theory (ART). According to ART, time in nature can help the brain:
Participants in the study described how outdoor coaching felt less pressured and more engaging. One noted: “You see different things, hear different things, and feel different things.” Others highlighted how the open space encouraged a stronger connection to their thoughts and emotions.
Walk and talk coaching sessions happen at your pace and in a natural setting. The conversation and pace is led by you, allowing for a relaxed yet focused conversation. Many people find the movement and setting help them feel more energised and better able to reflect, explore challenges, and gain clarity.
